Jazz Postcard Student Project

My Graphic Design 2 class  is in it’s second week and the students already have two projects under their belts. Well done. One of the projects was a 6 x 9 postcard for a Jazz concert. And my students know to never come with just one version.

Here are two created by Jen. During crit this first student (Jen) said that “she had never made an illustration in Adobe Illustrator before”.

Professor VIctoria Martin, Palm Beach State

I am very proud of both of these students because they both stated that they felt they had a weaknesses in a particular area and wanted to challenge themselves to push their comfort levels and try something different. The card below was created by Monica who challenged herself to explore typography. She chose a serif typeface that she felt reflected NYC Jazz clubs. I really like how she rotated the type to echo the stem of the J. She also rotated the order of the word Jazz. Did you notice? When I think of Jazz I think of music that sort of skips all over the place. So the A being in the middle makes sense to me.  Two very different approaches and both successful in different ways.  Well done ladies.

What have you been up to?

Last week I was a  busy girl.  Do you ever have those weeks where it seems like you turn around and there is another deadline on your desk?

Not complaining. Honestly. I do love it.  Totally and completely. I kind of enjoy working under a little pressure. Are you the same? Deadline is something I take very seriously. And let’s face it, anyone can be replaced and you will be if you don’t get camera ready work submitted on time. I often tell my students that class time is not all that different from work time. Consider me your boss. We are an Ad Agency. Crit day is deadline. When you are late in class you hurt your grade. When you’re late in a newspaper or magazine… you cost your boss  money and probably your job.

Be true to your work. Do what you say you are going to do and if you can’t, look for a really talented classmate who wants to make some money. (or student) As artists and designers, networking is super important.

Student Feature: Gustav

This morning I would like to give a shout out to yet another talented design student here at Palm Beach State; say hello to Gustav. These pieces were created as self promotional work in my Design Fundamentals class. Gustav has only just started but I can already see a style emerging in his work. Can you?

Colorful celebrity Pop Posters. He is all about color. I can already see a strength with composition. Look at the balance in each piece. See how Gustav uses color and line to move your eye. These pieces are electric. Just the right balance of dynamic color and neutral.

I consider myself lucky having students like Gustav in my classroom. Your work inspires other students and you demonstrate how effortless good design can be. Well done!
